Feliz Navidad

Apparently the boys came across the song Feliz Navidad at kindergarten. I think one of the teachers who was dressed up as Santa Claus on the school bus was singing it or had it playing.

I could not be more pleased. One, because it's not Last Christmas. Two, and most importantly, it's one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time and I love that Kenzo and Osamu have had it stuck in their heads these last few days.

This morning at soccer club Osamu was singing it the entire time, much to the confusion of the coaches. Plus, when he sings it the words come out kinda muddled. He's trying to sing "Feliz Navidad" but it sounds like "please namida". "Namida" in Japanese means "tears," as in the crying kind. I just shrugged my shoulders when the coaches looked at me.

Last night and today we had Jose Feliciano playing in the house quite a bit.

After soccer we just relaxed in the living room and did puzzles and played and looked out the window at the cold, windy, sometimes drizzly day. Kenzo learned what was sleet is today. The ride home from soccer was very sleety. He was curious what you call it when it's not quite rain and not quite snow.

After nap time I popped open my homemade eggnog. It's been cooling in the fridge since last night. Eri had a little. I poured a good full glass for myself. Osamu requested some as well. Kenzo declined, but took a sniff just to see what it was like. I sprinkled a little cinnamon on top after adding a little bourbon to mama's and papa's glasses. Eri said it tasted like Christmas, even though in Japan "tastes like Christmas" isn't really a thing.

Osamu ended up having a few sips and said he'd have it later. However, later he said papa could have it.

I fell asleep on the couch watching Home Alone with the boys, and when I woke up it was dinner time. Eri prepared a feast. Pizza and fried chicken for the boys. Tomato chili motsunabe for the grown-ups. One of my absolute favorites. This was our first time having tomato chili though.

Eri's not a huge fan of motsunabe. She made it because she knows I love it and we rarely have it. I get it. It's basically tripe hot pot. But oh sooooo good.

After we ate most of the goodies from the pot she dumped in fettuccine noodles and cheese and I cannot tell you how amazing it was. We were both stuffed and completely in awe of how delicious it was. When it came time for Christmas cake the boys ate it but Eri and I passed. We were in a state of post-feast lethargy and completely immobile.

Kenzo and Osamu are of course very excited for Santa to visit tonight. Before bed, though, they got to open one present each, and they chose presents from grandma.

Story time was one of our favorites with a Christmas theme. Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. Santa Claus appears at the end and helps the hero of the story get home. We read that story any time of the year, but on Christmas Eve it's especially touching.

Mr. Blue Sky

Man, I conked out so hard on the living room floor tonight. Right after bath time, before story time. I barely remember. Completely exhausted. Big adventure day. Another in a long series I hope the boys will remember when they’re older... our first IMAX movie, a downtown city outing, and some life lessons in the game center. We left the house at 9:15 a.m. and didn’t get back until nearly 6 p.m., totally spent but full of pizza and memories. The Wild Robot in IMAX was totally stunning. The scale, the colors, the sound. We could feel every gust of wind and rustle of leaves. I made sure we had prime seats, row G, right in the center. Two big buckets of popcorn too, which, according to Kenzo and Osamu, I  absolutely should not  be sharing. “You should get your own!” they kept saying. I think a little bit of popcorn thievery is well within my rights as the papa. After the movie, we headed through the cold and wind across to the game center on the other side of Sendai Station. Being...

Not About Baseball

I stayed up past my bedtime again last night. I almost made it. I watched a couple of episodes of Ted Lasso and came to a good stopping point where I was satisfied with myself for enjoying some quiet TV time with my favorite show and even though it was after midnight, I was confident I could still get a pretty good night's sleep.  But no. For some reason I decided it would be a good idea to just lay on the living room carpet and put on a movie. I saw the first seven or eight minutes of Goodfellas and then I woke up when the end credits were rolling with Sid Vicious' is cover of My Way . I brush my teeth and I can see the light of day already shining in through the bathroom window. "It’s almost the longest day of the year," I told myself, to at least rationalize why I'm brushing my teeth and crawling into bed at this hour. I was trying to minimize the mental anguish I regularly put on myself for not just going to bed like I should. I told Eri that I was thinking a...

Sendai vs. Tokushima

Osamu said he had to go pee, and I make it a habit to believe him most of the time. Another habit I have is taking him to go pee, much of the time.  When we came out of the restroom I decided it was time for a beer, so with Osamu holding my hand we waltzed over to the food concession and I was checking out the selection, and the prices. Seven hundred yen for a draft beer. I had a feeling. It was only 500 for a whiskey cocktail (whiskey with water on the rocks) but I wasn't about to be that much of a derelict this early with my four-year-old son in tow. The tickets were free, the seats aren't bad, might as well spend seven bucks on a beer. The problem was that the dude next to us with his little boy about the same age as Mumu-chan loudly and with braggadocio you don't often see in these parts ordered a Blue Hawaii snow cone for his kid. I heard this and panicked. Last weekend at Michinoku Park I got a Blue Hawaii snow cone for Osamu and he loved it.  I looked down at my l...
