A Beaut

I was just heading out after eating lunch to see what Kenzo‘s progress was with getting home from school and right as I stepped off the porch there was a lizard basking in the lunchtime sun.

Right then Kenzo and Rinka-chan walked up, so I motioned to them that I needed them to not come up the steps because it'll scare the lizard away, but for some reason words didn't come out of my mouth and I was gesturing awkwardly and doing a bizarre pantomime and Rinka-chan surely looked at Kenzo and said something like, "What is up with your dad?"

I caught the lizard, though. And he's a beaut.

I fell asleep last night sitting at the kitchen table again, I think. My memory is a little fuzzy because I was extremely tired and after just a few sips of wine I was already starting to fade out. I remember waking up with my head pounding. I either hit the floor or the humidifier. Either way, it was the worst one yet. This is the 3rd time in about 6 months.

This photo doesn't really show how swollen it is, which I guess it good. Eri and my psychiatrist and even the voice inside my head keep telling me to get more sleep, but the more I hear that the harder it seems to be to actually make that happen.

Even though he had zero responsibilities or places he was expected to be, Osamu was up and dressed even earlier than Kenzo. The morning air was amazing, so we had all the windows open and Osamu was busy making... something... in the living room. He's generally a Tasmanian Devil sort of boy, but when he's left to his own devices and without distractions he is pretty industrious.

We all skipped soccer club today because it was Kenzo's very first elementary school field day.

Osamu was so excited that he dressed in his kindergarten sports clothes and proudly walked with Eri and me up to the school. Kenzo walked to school early with the neighborhood boys and girls.

He came in second in his race and did great with the tame-ire game, but man he could not muster any excitement for the dance portion of the proceedings.

Eri was a bit irritated because it seemed like Kenzo was just copying his listless friend next to him while literally every single other kid enjoyed the dance.

After he suffered through the dance he brought the magic for the tama-ire game, but his class didn't win.

Eri, Osamu, and I walked home and Kenzo came home a little later, where he and Rinka-chan caught me clumsily catching that lizard.

I skipped breakfast and just had coffee and aojiru so Eri's pork and eggplant stir fry was like heaven.

Osamu's allergies have been acting up again so Eri took the boys to the doctor and of course after the appointment they scoured the area outside the clinic for lizards and bugs. They even brought their bug boxes.

Later I walked over to Ichinazaka and paid a visit to Japan Meat, a crowded market that I'm starting to think is overrated. I got some good deals on meat for tomorrow's barbecue, but as I walked home I thought it might be worth it to pay the extra to not have to deal with all those people and just go to the regular supermarket.

On my way home I passed a house that had some green bean sprouts sitting outside with a sign saying, "How about growing some?"

My hands were full so I snapped a picture and sent it to Eri.

I just loved how they even provided bags to carry the bean sprouts home.

Mr. Blue Sky

Man, I conked out so hard on the living room floor tonight. Right after bath time, before story time. I barely remember. Completely exhausted. Big adventure day. Another in a long series I hope the boys will remember when they’re older... our first IMAX movie, a downtown city outing, and some life lessons in the game center. We left the house at 9:15 a.m. and didn’t get back until nearly 6 p.m., totally spent but full of pizza and memories. The Wild Robot in IMAX was totally stunning. The scale, the colors, the sound. We could feel every gust of wind and rustle of leaves. I made sure we had prime seats, row G, right in the center. Two big buckets of popcorn too, which, according to Kenzo and Osamu, I  absolutely should not  be sharing. “You should get your own!” they kept saying. I think a little bit of popcorn thievery is well within my rights as the papa. After the movie, we headed through the cold and wind across to the game center on the other side of Sendai Station. Being...

Not About Baseball

I stayed up past my bedtime again last night. I almost made it. I watched a couple of episodes of Ted Lasso and came to a good stopping point where I was satisfied with myself for enjoying some quiet TV time with my favorite show and even though it was after midnight, I was confident I could still get a pretty good night's sleep.  But no. For some reason I decided it would be a good idea to just lay on the living room carpet and put on a movie. I saw the first seven or eight minutes of Goodfellas and then I woke up when the end credits were rolling with Sid Vicious' is cover of My Way . I brush my teeth and I can see the light of day already shining in through the bathroom window. "It’s almost the longest day of the year," I told myself, to at least rationalize why I'm brushing my teeth and crawling into bed at this hour. I was trying to minimize the mental anguish I regularly put on myself for not just going to bed like I should. I told Eri that I was thinking a...

Sendai vs. Tokushima

Osamu said he had to go pee, and I make it a habit to believe him most of the time. Another habit I have is taking him to go pee, much of the time.  When we came out of the restroom I decided it was time for a beer, so with Osamu holding my hand we waltzed over to the food concession and I was checking out the selection, and the prices. Seven hundred yen for a draft beer. I had a feeling. It was only 500 for a whiskey cocktail (whiskey with water on the rocks) but I wasn't about to be that much of a derelict this early with my four-year-old son in tow. The tickets were free, the seats aren't bad, might as well spend seven bucks on a beer. The problem was that the dude next to us with his little boy about the same age as Mumu-chan loudly and with braggadocio you don't often see in these parts ordered a Blue Hawaii snow cone for his kid. I heard this and panicked. Last weekend at Michinoku Park I got a Blue Hawaii snow cone for Osamu and he loved it.  I looked down at my l...
